Synopsis (Goodreads.com):
It's the year 2044, and the real world is an ugly place.
Like most of humanity, Wade Watts escapes his grim surroundings by spending his waking hours jacked into the OASIS, a sprawling virtual utopia that lets you be anything you want to be, a place where you can live and play and fall in love on any of ten thousand planets.
And like most of humanity, Wade dreams of being the one to discover the ultimate lottery ticket that lies concealed within this virtual world. For somewhere inside this giant networked playground, OASIS creator James Halliday has hidden a series of fiendish puzzles that will yield massive fortune--and remarkable power--to whoever can unlock them.
For years, millions have struggled fruitlessly to attain this prize, knowing only that Halliday's riddles are based in the pop culture he loved--that of the late twentieth century. And for years, millions have found in this quest another means of escape, retreating into happy, obsessive study of Halliday's icons. Like many of his contemporaries, Wade is as comfortable debating the finer points of John Hughes's oeuvre, playing Pac-Man, or reciting Devo lyrics as he is scrounging power to run his OASIS rig.
And then Wade stumbles upon the first puzzle.
Suddenly the whole world is watching, and thousands of competitors join the hunt--among them certain powerful players who are willing to commit very real murder to beat Wade to this prize. Now the only way for Wade to survive and preserve everything he knows is to win. But to do so, he may have to leave behind his oh-so-perfect virtual existence and face up to life--and love--in the real world he's always been so desperate to escape.
My Thoughts (Spoiler-Free):
At first I didn't want to give into the hype and get this book, but then I won a giveaway and thought why not?! Since everyone and their mom was raving about this book, I knew it was going to be good, but I didn't know it was going to be THAT good by making it onto my "favorite books of all time" list!
Geraldine was writing this review as a draft, but she is studying abroad in Spain now, so I am just going to kind of take over this review. We had the same opinion of this book so I have confidence in myself that whatever Geraldine would want to have said I will say-Phil
So, like Geraldine, I originally didn't want to pick up this book, and then I, also like Geraldine, won a giveaway, and figured why not!
Geraldine and I, along with our friends Ke-sha and Alyssa decided to do a read-along of this book together. Very quickly things went awry when Ke-sha decided to just totally ignore the whole point of a read along and finished the book before all of us. Then Geraldine finished it quickly after Ke-sha, leaving me and Alyssa to finish it on the actual date we were supposed to, but besides the point, this book was AMAZING!
It is very hard to talk about this book without giving too much away, but the quote on cover of the book describes it the best I think "Willy Wonka meets The Matrix", as as ridiculous as that sounds, it is so true.
The OASIS, literally sounds like the best thing in the entire world, if it existed, I would 100% have one. You can immerse yourself into a digitalworld worlds! Anything from Hogwarts, to Lord of the Rings, to a world that is just made of bubble gum, the OASIS can take you anywhere, and for a die hard video game fan like me, that is just amazing.
Geraldine originally wanted to put likes and dislikes into this review, but since this has kind of become my review I don't know what she wanted to say. Personally I only had one dislike, and it was that at some points, our main character, Wade, let his love for his virtual competitor and friend, Art3mis, get in the way of the competition for the Easter Egg. But other than that small little detail, I liked every bit of this book, and like Geraldine, also added it to my favorite books of all time list on Goodreads.com.

I've been putting this book off for months now. It's been on my 'to read' shelve for ages, and I just haven't felt that motivated to read it. I guess I should now!
